What Is Pre-milling?
The pre-milling unit was typically composed of two counter-rotating milling cutters positioned before the glue application unit. The cutters may be carbide-tipped or diamond-tipped.
In the panel process, boards are usually cut with a beam saw, sliding table saw, or CNC nesting machine. Even when the cutting process is accurate, the panel edge may still have small saw marks, or minor chipping. It can affect how consistently glue is applied and how clean the finished edge appears.
As the panel enters the edgebander, the pre-milling unit removes a small and controlled layer from the edge—typically around 0.5–2 mm. The two milling cutters work from opposite directions to create a smooth and even surface.
Why Is Pre-milling Important?
If glue is applied directly onto uneven surfaces, small gaps may form between the panel and the edge banding material. Over time, these gaps can lead to weaker bonding, visible glue lines, moisture penetration, and premature edge failure.

Straight Edge Pre-Milling
Straight edge pre-milling is the standard configuration for conventional 90-degree furniture panels. It prepares the straight edge of MDF, plywood, melamine-faced board, and other panel materials before edge banding.
